Summary

Ayurveda is reffered as the "science of life" in the ancient Sanskrit and has been a key part of a comprehensive natural health care system in India as well as Sri Lanka for over 2000 years. An Ayurvedic practitioner uses holistic techniques from India to help patients. The natural therapies are tailored to the needs of each individual to eliminate impurities, reduce stress and fight disease .The Treatment range from diet and lifestyle advice, massages, yoga and meditation to herbal supplements, counseling, or specialized therapies. Ayurvedic practitioners assess diet habits, lifestyle, and mental states of the patient.

Pros & Cons of a Career in Ayurveda

Pros
  • Being able to help others: Ayurvedic doctors provide a meaningful service using medical science to help others. Many individuals are drawn to the profession because they want to help others.Ayurvedic mediciences are safe to consume with less side effects. By helping others the individual gets the feeling that their knowledge or actions has helped someone specially in the case where allopathy failed to help. It is an old science and is gaining popularity slowly.
  • Job security: This is one of the few professions which would always be in demand and is not affected by the recession. The society will always need doctors.
  • Money and security: Doctors have a relatively high salary and income. Their demand is on increasing rate.
  • Prestige: They generally gain community respect.
Cons
  • Long training route: To practice as a doctor it requires at least four years of college with internship and 2-3 years of masters in the specialized area. It makes the whole process too long before the person actually starts to practice.
  • High college fees: The fees of medical colleges is generally very high.
  • Long work hours, high stress and patience: The job is very demanding. It requires physical, mental and emotional involvement and drains his/her energy.
  • Longer period to establish: As Ayurveda is a new area and is growly slowly, the market is increasing at a slow rate. You will require patience and expertise to be successful in the area.
  • Knowledge about Sanskrit: The course structure includes Sanskrit and if your class 12th subjects does not include Sanskrit, then you will have hard time in coping up.
