Marine Biology

Summary

Marine biology is the study of all marine organisms, right from planktons and microbes, to plants and animals. Marine biologists investigate the behaviors and interactions of marine life with their surroundings. With the increase in environmental degradation, Marine Biologists try to understand how these challenges are affecting marine organisms, and come up with solutions to control and treat them. Methods and techniques employed in this field include trawlers, sonars, and satellites.

  • Fisheries Biologist
    In general, this field includes the study of how the environment and other external forces affect fish life cycle. Its major application is to remedy problems associated with fish habitats. This option is becoming increasingly popular with the increase in the market demands of the fisheries industry.
  • Aqua culturist
    Aquaculture is concerned with the farming of fishes and seaweeds. Another thriving area for marine biologists, aquaculture is gaining importance worldwide as consumer demands for fish are increasingly becoming greater than can be met by traditional commercial fishing.
  • Natural Resource Manager
    A natural resource manager is involved in the handling and general management of plants, lakes, soil, forests, and other natural resources. Jobs for natural resource managers are available in both government and private settings.

    Marine biologists can be employed as environmental consultants and advisors to help design measures, laws, and regulations to protect the environment.
