Blogging has become a trending career option; and the new-age media including social news, entertainment, social media, etc. has given it a much-required boost, and has opened up a world of opportunities. Before one takes up blogging seriously, one would ask is if blogging as a career has good earning potential. The short answer is – Yes.
A decent flair for writing, and a passion about a particular topic/area is all you need to get started. You can pick up anything from travel to fashion, from tech to food, to write your blog on. There are different types of bloggers, basis what and how they write, their expertise in the subject they write on, and their time commitments. In addition, these are also the factors that contribute to the money they make from blogging.
Here, we list 4 types of bloggers, with their earning potential:
- THE ONES WHO START BLOGGING AS A HOBBY:
There are bloggers, who have the passion for a topic, and would love to share their knowledge on the same. While they have other work commitments such as their job or studies, their passion makes them a Hobbyist Blogger. Blogging is the easiest way for them to share their content, and reach out to the masses. A good hobbyist blogger always thinks about the content s/he would share with everyone, and focuses on the quality and not on the fame or money blog would make. While blogging as a hobby doesn’t take much of anyone’s time, it’s a great way to build an audience and share what you love.
Topics they blog on: Generally personal musings since they blog for fun, and it is just a plan B for them- they blog on their passion or a strong hobby
Do they earn any income: Not to begin with
Time devoted to blogging: About 4-5 hours a week
- THE PART-TIME BLOGGERS:
Part-time blogging is a mature version of the HOBBYIST BLOGGING and any teenager/college-goer or working professional can take it up who’s ready to put in an extra effort than what a hobbyist generally does. Part-time bloggers, often, supplement their income through blogging, and it’s upon their discretion whether they want to start their own blogging channel from the scratch or they could be a freelancer/employed blogger for an established company or site.
Topics they blog on: Anything in their area of interest and expertise
Income (if any): Yes, if working as a freelancer or employed blogger; the range completely depends on your credibility and domain knowledge. As a part time professional, a good blogger can earn about 15-20k per month or even more.
No (initially), for the ones who start their own blog. They start earning once their blog progresses and the loyal audiences/customers they fetch via blogging increases. The amount you earn via blogging is directly proportional to the efforts you put in and your reach.
Time devoted to blogging: About 2 hours per day
- THE FULL-TIME BLOGGERS:
Full-time bloggers have blogging as their main source of income, rather than a supplementary source. Full-time bloggers are the ones who earn through their blogs, have a good audience base and avid readers who trust their blogs. Setting up and monetizing a blog is like nurturing a baby. Once they have build a loyal following on their blog, they can monetize it through various channels – running ads on the blog, putting sponsored content, featuring a brand, etc. The amount money one can make is a function of the amount of traffic and the subject of the blog. For instance – one can earn up to INR 100 per ad for every 1000 views on a technology-related blog that covers review, tips and tricks on gadgets.
Topics they blog on: Very focused; topics could range from tech to entertainment, from food to finance.
Income: A full-time successful Blogger earns about INR 50,000 to INR 25 lakhs per month.
Time devoted to blogging: Full-time
- THE PROFESSIONAL BLOGGERS:
Professional bloggers are full-time bloggers that work for corporates. While full-time bloggers are self-made and are more “entrepreneurial” in nature, the professional bloggers, usually, blog as part of their full-time job for an organization. They blog to share expertise, gain professional recognition, attract new clients, etc.
Topics they blog on: Products relating to the organization
Income: Depends on their work profile, work experience; could range from INR 10K to a few lakhs per month
Time devoted to blogging : 5-6 days a week; depends on the organization they are employed with.
So, start your blog if you love to write, and are passionate about a topic. With time, focus and focussed effort, you can become popular in your area of interest, and eventually, monetize it.
