1. Mumbai University
When all eyes are on Delhi University, great colleges in Mumbai University often tend to be overlooked. It is one of the largest universities in the world and has associations with some renowned global universities like the University of Bath, University of Amsterdam, etc. Although the cut-offs for Mumbai University aren’t as high as Delhi University, the competition for its various courses is elevating each year.
Mumbai University offers some brilliant courses, like Bachelor’s in Mass Media (BMM), Bachelor’s in Management Studies (BMS), BA, B.Com, BCA, and professional medical courses like MBBS and BDS.
There is no central application form for Mumbai University, and admission procedures may vary from college to college. Some colleges might have entrance exams (such as St. Xavier’s College) for various courses, while most colleges take admissions through merit. All the professional courses require you to sit for entrance examinations, while courses like BBA, BCA, B.A or B.Com are merit-based.

2. Delhi University
University of Delhi, one of the oldest and largest universities in India, is well-known for its high cut-off percentages. The university has carved a niche for itself as a centre for excellence in teaching and research across various domains.
The University of Delhi has 16 faculties and 86 academic departments, which offer courses in a wide variety of subjects across the faculties of arts, sciences, commerce, management studies, etc. Some of the most famous courses among DU colleges include Economic Honours, B.Com Honours, English Honours, Political Science Honours, History Honours, Physics Honours, Psychology Honours, Journalism and Mass Communication, etc.

3. Banaras Hindu University
One of the finest universities, Banaras Hindu University, ranked 3rd among the top universities in India in the National Institutional Ranking in 2017, is known for its excellent course structures. It offers a wide range of disciplines, from art and science to Ayurveda and technology, making it a treasure trove of everything to be found in a university.
Banaras Hindu University also sets itself apart by taking undergraduate admissions through entrance examinations, instead of merit. BHU conducts undergraduate admission tests (BHU UET) for all its UG courses. There are 6 colleges affiliated to BHU, and the test is conducted by the main body.
The entrance tests for all courses wrap up by the last week of May every year. The results are announced from 1st week to 3rd week of June, specific to different courses.
Colleges are allotted based on your closing rank, and there are rank cut-offs for each course in the main campus as well as affiliated colleges.

4. Ambedkar University
Bharat Ratna Dr B. R. Ambedkar University, or Ambedkar University Delhi (AUD), was established by the Government of Delhi in 2008. It is one of the upcoming educational platforms and offers brilliant courses across various domains in the humanities and social sciences. These world-class courses make the best use of knowledge through new-age learning styles.
AUD presently has two campuses – at Kashmere Gate and Karampura. The admission procedure for UG courses is based on merit, for which cut-off lists are generated. The number of seats for each course are 35 at the main campus, and 50 at the Karampura campus.
Students belonging to Delhi have an added advantage, as 85% of the total seats are reserved for Delhi residents.

5. Panjab University
Established in 1947, Panjab University is one of the oldest universities in India. It presents a lot of diversity and high-class education in its various undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The admission to B.Sc and B.Pharma courses is through an entrance test – PU CET (UG). Although, a few colleges offer these courses on a merit basis as well. Other courses like B.Com, B.A (Hons.) Economics, etc. from the department of evening studies and the Chandigarh campus are merit-based.
Courses like BBA, B.Com, BCA, Hotel Management, etc. are completely application and merit-based.
The top colleges among Panjab University include S.D College, M.C.M College for Girls, DAV College, G.G.D.S.D. College, etc.

6. University of Calcutta
The University of Calcutta was the first institution to be established in India with multidisciplinary courses and a wide range of specializations providing Honours, General, and Major degrees. For courses like B.A and B.Com, the admissions are merit-based. For all other courses, the results of entrance tests are considered in the selection procedure.
The final admissions to colleges are done on the basis of the cut-off and merit list prepared by the University.

St. Xavier’s College, one of the top colleges of the university, has its own application procedure for various undergraduate and postgraduate courses. You have to apply at the St. Xavier’s website for UG courses. Courses like B.Com and B.A in English and Economics are seen with high cut-offs ranging from 92%-98%. Admission to the BBA course is through an entrance exam.
7. Jamia Millia Islamia University
Jamia Millia Islamia University is a public, central university in Delhi. The academic departments of the university are spread across nine faculties including, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Architecture and Ekistics, Faculty of Humanities and Languages, Faculty of Sciences, etc.

The admission to all the courses at JMI University is done through a combination of the scores on the common entrance test, interview and the candidates’ overall profile. The merit list of the entrance test determines the further steps in the admission process.
For all engineering and architecture courses, admission is done through the JEE Main examination.
There is a common application portal on the website, through which you can apply to the various courses. The seats for the university are limited and thus comes with significant competition.
8. Jawaharlal Nehru University
JNU, one of the most eminent universities in India, is known for its thriving political life on campus. Its vision revolves around raising a voice for the social issues of feminism, minority rights, social and economic justice. Alongside a fresh perspective on these issues, it offers brilliant academic courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
- At the undergraduate level, the only academic courses available are under the School of Language, Literature and Cultural Studies. It breaks the conventional path by providing world-class education in foreign languages. The most famous courses include B.A. (Hons.) in Arabic, B.A. (Hons.) in Korean, B.A. (Hons.) in Chinese, B.A. (Hons.) in German, B.A. (Hons.) in Russian and Spanish, etc.
- B.A. (Hons.) in Foreign Languages (except Pashto) is an integral part of the 5-year M.A. programme. On successful completion of B.A. (Hons.), you will be eligible to seek registration to the first year of the M.A. programme in the respective language, without having to go through the entrance examination.
- There is also a provision to admit students in the 2nd year of B.A. (Hons.) programme if they have completed their first year of graduation as per the eligibility of the university.
The admission takes place through the Common entrance test, JNUEE. The entrance test for B.A (Hons.) Foreign Languages consists of sections of General Knowledge, General English and Elementary Knowledge.
9. Savitribai Phule Pune University
Pune University has 46 departments and 433 affiliated colleges, offering courses in Science, Social Science, Management, Law, and more.
The top colleges of Pune University include Fergusson College, J.T.S.S.P Mandal’s Shri Shiv Chhatrapati College of Arts, Science & Commerce, Abasaheb Garware College, (Arts & Science), Modern College of Arts, Science & Commerce, etc.
Note: There is no common admission portal for application forms to the undergraduate courses in Pune university. You have to apply individually to specific colleges and look for their merit lists for the enrollment.
