The TATA Institute of Social Sciences was first established in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. Then in the year 1944, it was renamed the TATA Institute of Social Sciences. The year 1964 marked an important landmark in the history of the institute, as it was declared Deemed to be a University under University Grants Commission Act (UGC), 1956.

Programs Offered at the TATA Institute of Social Sciences
Several courses are offered at the TATA Institute of Social Sciences which include PG Programmes, and Ph.D. Programs, UG Programmes, and Short-Term Programmes.
1. PG Programmes Eligibility Criteria
Candidates who want to apply for this program at the TATA Institute of Social Sciences should have completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree of a minimum of 3 or 4 years from a University which is recognized by the University Grants Commission of India. Some of the Master’s Degree programs provided by the institution will have some additional requirements.
Candidates who studied in a 3-year degree program should have cleared all the subjects from the 1st to 4th semester and those who studied in 4-year programs should have passed in all the subjects from the 1st to 6th semester.
The candidates who have fulfilled the above-mentioned conditions must submit their degree certificate and final grade sheet which will act as evidence of completing the eligibility criteria, until then the admission offered will remain provisional.
The information provided in the application will be used for the final selection procedure. If it is found that the information provided by the candidate is incorrect or misleading then the candidature will be canceled and the Institute has the right to take legal action for any act of false declaration.
2. Master of Philosophy in Psychiatric Social Work at TATA Institute of Social Sciences
The minimum qualification to get admission in M.Phil programs is a Second Class Master’s Degree from a recognized University in India or Abroad. The applicant must have an average of 55 percent or a grade point of 3.5 under the seven-point scale of the UGC.
If a provisionally admitted candidate completes all the admission formalities but fails to score the minimum marks demanded at the end of the final year examination of the Master’s degree then the admission will automatically get canceled.
3. Ph.D. and MPhil Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility criteria for this Ph.D. program offered by the TATA Institute of Social Sciences is the same as the M.Phil Programme. The candidates who hold an M.Phil or a degree equivalent to it awarded by a recognized university in India or Abroad are also eligible to apply for this program.
For the Ph.D. The program offered by the TATA Institute of Social Sciences candidates will be shortlisted for the Research Aptitude Test (RAT) if they meet the criteria concerning educational qualifications, work experience, and research.
Applicants must submit a research proposal which is a compulsory requirement for admission to the Ph.D. Program by the TATA Institute of Social Sciences. The research proposal must have approximately 1,000 words and indicate a specific broad field of study, have a statement of the research problem, scope, and objectives of the study, methodology to be followed, references along with the applicant’s research or work experience in that area, if any.
4. UG Eligibility Criteria
The candidates who want to apply must have passed 10+2 or equivalent along with 50% marks from a recognized board. Candidates who have appeared in their 12th examination or Intermediate final exams and are awaiting the results can also apply.
International students who have studied in a University located in a non-English speaking region must provide proof of English Language Proficiency. The applicant must provide any one of the following:
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) where a band of 6.5 is required.
Test of English as a Foreign Language where a score of above 90 is accepted. Candidates must appear for the International Entrance Test (IET).
The eligible candidates who have fulfilled the above-mentioned conditions need to appear for TISS Bachelors Admission Test. The International Students will have to clear the International Entrance Test (IET) and the shortlisted applicants will be called for a skype interview.
The TATA Institute of Social Sciences follows the Choice Based Credit System pattern and the students are provided with a choice of specializations and engage it through field-based research during the last semester.
5. Nirantar: Continuing Education Programmes (STP)
Several programs are offered by the TATA Institute of Social Sciences under this Nirantar Programme. Those candidates who will fulfill the requirements will be interviewed by the Selection Commission of the institute.
The names of the selected applicants will be displayed on the Notice Board of the Institute, hosted on the official website, and also through email. The responsibility of informing the candidates about their selection by post will not be taken by the institute.
